Mark,
I was thinking of you since Stuey or Chris mentioned you are moving to Newtown.
Sounds like you are really busy but I was wondering if you would be interested in possibly getting something going as a duo or trio. I want to play more gigs and record a lot of songs in the coming months.
Mary & I are playing this Friday at Inn at Newtown across from the flagpole from 8-11:00... If you are free and want to come by, I'd love to chat w/you. Let me know... feel free to bring your guitar if you are in the mood.
Stuey & Chris always say how great you play!
Hope to hear from you.

Thanks for the inspiration!! Just an old lady realizing an old dream!! Gotta learn how to play the strings so I can improve my voice and ear and just get better in general. Real life has so gotten in the way! Either way thanks for the joy I get from just listening!!! You guys are great and so much fun!

well well, another musician named Mark Barden. 'm a composition student currently getting my Master's in Freiburg, Germany and I thought it is about time I organize a website. Shucks, dude, you beat me to the website name...if you ever throw in the towel and want to drop your (admittedly excellent) site, lemme know! haha. =) Take it easy, Mark.
Best,
Mark (Barden)

Who knew there was a website? Just read through it and now I am thoroughly depressed. Gary, John DiGug, Pea! Where has the time gone?
Haven't seen you in a while. Great Christmas Card. I keep meaning to pop in and catch a show, but my popping days are apparently over. I'll make it one of these days. Until then, say hi to everyone.

Holy Crap!!!!
I thought I posted this long ago!!!!
Long ago, in a time I think about with great fondness and awe, I was behind Billy Weavers house and I heard Dark Star for the first time... I don't want to, and cant talk about the music but it was the first time I got goose bumbs listening to music. Mark I don't know how to say this but when you play I am Happy and there is nothing else I can think about but the notes that flow through through the speakers and I know I'm just lucky enough to be there.
You are the most incredible musician that I have ever had the pleasure of shaking hands with. The road goes on forever and I will be on that road listening to you...
Thanks

Brother, obviously you and Artie made a deep impression on me (and my wife) at the Coach party in Larchmont this past Saturday night. I already wrote to Artie to tell him how blown away everyone was at that house. Now I've done some researchin' on the internet and realize that I wasn't imagining that we were in the presence of the real thing with you two guys. I just want to thank you sincerely for an incredibly great night of music, as entertaining and professional as it gets. I only wish the both of you the best music has to offer true, dedicated, passionate musicians. People being entertained can very easily take for granted being in the presence of greatness. As I told you, I did not. With great respect to you and Artie.....TF. God speed and best of luck

just got back from catching your latest gig in greenwich. another great show by you and artie, this time augmented by mark on bass and stuart on drums. the addition of the rhythm section brought out another aspect of your playing, as you were able to stretch out more on fills and solos. the dead covers were brilliant; a precise and rollicking version of "franklin's tower" got the fannies off the seats and an electric "bertha" that got the crowd moving in the second set. as big a clapton fan as i am, "lay down sally" isn't one of my favorites; your treatment of it, though, made it a standout as you took a gentle boogie and gave it a sonic overhaul via nashville that made me hear that tune in a whole new way. fantastic. the crown jewel, however, had to be your searing cover of "cortez the killer"--eerie, moody, and magnificent, the perfect show-stopper. my jaw was left hanging after you were done. another evening well spent listening to you pour your heart out through your tele. see you next week at the new rochelle gig...

I caught your show at the Bitter End last night...I was blown away. I wrote down your name when kathleen introduced you and i went home and looked you up. I was there to see someone else and Deena said to stay for Kathleen's show. Your ability to go from atmospheric soundscapes to straight ahead blowing is both impressive and so appropriate for her music. I love her songs and what you and the band do with them. Thank you. Dale

Mark, how are you brother? I just googled your site, and was thrilled to be brought up to date on what's happening in your life. I'm still in Nashville, working with Charlie Louvin. I'm also pitching songs for Jim & Joe Music, and I own a studio with my partner and engineer Dan Boyd. I'm glad to know that life has worked out well for you. Be careful flying around New York!!! Hope to meet your family at some point in the future. Take care, and God Bless you and your family

Hi Mark!
We saw you play with Kathleen Pemble at the Peekskill Coffee House on 10/14/06. We really enjoyed the music! It was a great way to cap off the day. You are an amazing musician. You sounded great! I look forward to seeing you on stage again. Take care and best wishes.

Mark,
Nice website. Since the early days in Carl's basement to seeing you with Third Stone last Sunday night, it's been nothing but a treat for me to hear you play and learn from you. Now that I'm back in NY, some homebrew is coming your way! Cheers!

Hi there Mark.
This is a strange email, but I found you whilst looking up the Barden namesake on the internet. I'm Emily Barden living in Liverpool England and I'm a musician too!I'm a songwriter/singer/pianiat/guitar player and if you fancy seeing what I do check out www.myspace.com/stella66. It's weird, all the Barden's seem to be artists, musician, photographers or designers. Must be a creative gene somewhere..! Anyway, cheers for your time, and best wishes from Liverpool x

(((Mark))) How r u buddy!! So i google your name and here i am on your site!! Hope all is well with you and yours. We are doing quite well. I accepted a position with the bus company as co-operations manager! I'm really enjoying it and am loving being home every night! To allow you plenty of time to rearrange your schedule and maybe book a trip to Europe, i wanted to let you know that yours truly will be coming to NYC on the eve of Nov. 7th for a billboard conference on the 8th & 9th. It would be so awesome to see you unless you decide to make arrangements for a mountain hiking trip to the Himalayas in Tibet around that time! :)
Please give Jackie my love and your kids are so beautiful!!
I will be looking forward to hearing back from you unless of course you are in Australia taking over for Steve Irwin (God rest his soul) as the new Crocodile Hunter!! :)
Talk to you soon and by the way, Happy Belated Birthday my friend!

Enjoyed your site. I really like the Cox family, and I have fairly recently returned to playing guitar. I played in high school and college bands in the mid to late '60's, but didn't play much for the past twenty years. I've recently gotten into music again, and am really enjoying flatpicking and bluegrass. Glad to hear that you are pursuing your dream. I guess I decided to write all of this, because my birthday is July 27th, which was your parents' anniversary. Little coincidences like that in life always strike me. I was directed to your site from the Peekskill Coffee House site, and a link on Kathleen Pemble's site.

Some friends were listening to the work that Mark did on a recording of mine. It seems like he can play (the right notes) faster than the ears can hear them! You watch him play live and you just grin.
We all know of those famous guitarists that everyone wants to go see. They have huge followings and they sell-out big arenas. And then there's someone like Mark who can wail with the best of them. It's a gift to go to a local "joint" and hang with a guitarist of this caliber right here in our own back yard.
Take advantage of this opportunity. Catch his gigs at every opportunity. And when he really gets going, just TRY to listen as fast as he can play,

I would see Fred Astaire on the screen, and immediately get the urge to have my feet echo his movements. Watching Errol Flynn duel with Basil Rathbone would find me attempting to repeat the moves that set both men apart from the many other impersonators since.
What artistry would be on display and the respective love of the performing of it was so infectious as to have me drooling over their ability.
It's much the same watching Mark Barden perform - and I've seen him well over 100 times over the last almost 8 years. I'll grumble if my gazing of his magic fingers is disturbed by something blocking my sight. It's as if all he is and all he is capable of was transcended into the 10 digits that struck the strings and fondled the frets.
Once in a while he will find himself so much in a sense of "one" with his music that he will close his eyes as he performs - nothing from outside will conflict with his bond with his guitar. We in the audience only exist in his mind as a potentially pleasurable response - which is usually the case - but he's so at peace in these moments that it hardly matters. He's content in having pushed himself to this level of achievement and then looks to give even more.
In person, he is as laid back as his playing - he let's his ability speak for itself and in talking with the crowd, is never one to ask if he was appreciated, or have the need to do so. He knows what he can do, and he does it unassumingly. He is the musician who has to please himself before he considers the audience reaction and his bar is set high. Yet, he's an ultra professional who also has the unabashed respect of his fellow performers to be complimentary and not overshadowing.
I've sung to his accompaniment many times and have only felt his lack of ego and not his need to be center stage. He's the first to compliment the drummer, bass man or vocalist. They may not be at his level of ability, but they are indeed elevated for the time that they share the stage - well, in most cases, I've heard a few vocalists who couldn't be aided by an all-star band from Heaven.
Anyone reading this who has not experienced the talents of Mr. Barden live is really missing out on one of the most fulfilling experiences they can have as an audience member. Once sampled, I won't be surprised if one becomes a regular at his venues. Should these words even result many such cases, I'll still be in debt to this man for the pleasure given me.

I'm planning to see the River Rats at Metropolitan Cafe on Tuesday. Since they start around 10:30, that should leave a little time to visit Turtle Bay first.
Also, I visited with one of my guitar heroes, David Bromberg, while I was in Delaware this week and he invited me to an open Blues Jam they have every Thursday in a local coffee house. Had a great time.
I'll see you Tuesday (somewhere).

Mark,
We've been playing together for a long time....Dark Star, Blackberry Jam and many other variations. Throughout the years your playing style has remained fresh, and you sound better every time we play! You truly have raised the bar for all who have had the opportunity to play along with you...you have pushed us and made us better. Above all else though it is your friendship for which I am most grateful, you have a big heart and an uplifting spirit that shines through everything you do and that's what makes your music so special!!

Mark, from the first time I jammed with you at the Casa Calabria back in 1982, I knew you were special musician. Over the past 23 years that I have had the priveledge of calling you my friend, I've come to know that you are even more special as a person. You simply are THE man, and I consider it an honor to get to play with you semi-regularly. You raise the bar for all the rest of us!!! God bless. P.S. Thanks for the link to our site.

July 27, 2005
Hey Mark- Stacy Labriola from MotherLode Trio here. Terry just sent along your e-mail. We are THRILLED ,to say the least that you'd be interested in playing with us at some point. We're big fans of your playing. We still don't know Jeff's availability but due to the fact that he'll be so much farther away it's going to be difficult for him to get to gigs up here. As sad as we are about his moving he understands that we need to stay covered for the big gigs. We would love to meet with you in August - perhaps the week of the 8th? Let us know what works for you. This is just terrific that you'd consider working with us!! And I promise all the lucky musicians that found you first (Kathleen, Ali etc) get first dibs on your availbility so please let them know we'll be considerate. We look forward to meeting with you. Thanks for your note. - Stacy
